🌙 Fasting & Ramadan

Do you have to fast if you are traveling?

Answered with evidence from the Quran and authentic Hadith

Quick Answer

No. Travelers are given a concession to break their fast and make up the days later. However, if fasting is easy for you while traveling, you may choose to fast. The Companions of the Prophet did both — some fasted while traveling and some did not.

Detailed Answer

Islam gives travelers the choice: you may fast while traveling, or you may break your fast and make up the days after Ramadan. Neither option is wrong — the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) did both, and none criticized the other.

The distance that qualifies as "travel" is generally considered to be approximately 80-90 km (the same distance that permits shortening prayers). Modern scholars also consider the hardship of travel as a factor.

If fasting while traveling causes genuine hardship — such as long hot days, physical labor, or health concerns — it is better to break the fast, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said "It is not righteousness to fast while traveling" when he saw a companion struggling.

Evidence from Quran & Hadith

QuranQuran 2:184

فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ

Faman kana minkum mareedan aw 'ala safarin fa-'iddatun min ayyamin ukhar.

Whoever among you is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of days are to be made up.
