God in Islam (الله)

The Islamic concept of God is pure, absolute monotheism — called Tawheed. One God. No partners, no children, no intermediaries, no images. Just the Creator of everything.

Surah Al-Ikhlas · 112:1-4The Chapter of Pure Sincerity

Qul Huwal laahu Ahad. Allaahus Samad. Lam yalid wa lam yoolad. Wa lam yakul lahoo kufuwan ahad.

"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent."

The Prophet (ﷺ) said this surah is equal to one-third of the Quran (Sahih Al-Bukhari 5015). It is the most concise declaration of who God is in Islam — just 4 verses, yet it contains the entire Islamic theology of God.

What Does "Allah" Mean?

"Allah" (الله) is the Arabic word for "The God" — al-ilah contracted into Allah. It is not a foreign word or a different deity. It is the same word that Arabic-speaking Christians use in their prayers and Bibles.

Unlike the English word "God," Allah has no plural (no "gods") and no gender (no "goddess"). This linguistic feature reinforces the Islamic concept that God is absolutely unique — nothing like anything in creation.

The Quran says:

Quran 42:11

Laisa kamithlihee shai'un wa Huwas Samee'ul Baseer

"There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing."

Tawheed — The Oneness of God

1. Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah (توحيد الربوبية)

Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah

Oneness of Lordship: Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, Provider, and Controller of all things. No one else creates, sustains, or controls the universe.

2. Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (توحيد الألوهية)

Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah

Oneness of Worship: Allah alone deserves worship. No prayer, prostration, supplication, or devotion should be directed to anyone other than Him — not to prophets, saints, angels, or idols.

3. Tawheed al-Asma wa's-Sifat (توحيد الأسماء والصفات)

Tawheed al-Asma was-Sifat

Oneness of Names & Attributes: Allah's names and attributes are unique to Him. When we say He is "Al-Aleem" (All-Knowing), it means He knows everything — past, present, future, seen, unseen — in a way no creation can.

Key Attributes of Allah

The One

Al-Ahad · Quran 112:1

Absolutely one — not one of many, not one in three. One in a way that has no comparison.

The Creator

Al-Khaliq · Quran 59:24

He created everything from nothing — the heavens, the earth, every living thing, every atom.

The All-Knowing

العليم

Al-Aleem · Quran 2:255

He knows everything — what was, what is, what will be, and what could have been. Nothing is hidden from Him.

The Most Merciful

Ar-Rahman · Quran 1:1

His mercy encompasses all things (7:156). He divided mercy into 100 parts — 1 part is on earth (all compassion between creatures), 99 parts He saved for the Day of Judgment.

The All-Powerful

القدير

Al-Qadeer · Quran 2:20

Nothing is impossible for Him. His command is "Be" — and it is (36:82).

The Just

العدل

Al-Adl · Quran 4:40

Allah does not wrong anyone, even by the weight of an atom. Perfect justice is His nature.

How Close is Allah?

Despite His infinite majesty, Allah describes Himself as closer to you than your own jugular vein:

Quran 50:16

Wa Nahnu aqrabu ilaihi min hablil wareed

"And We are closer to him than his jugular vein."

And when His servants call on Him:

Quran 2:186

"And when My servants ask you about Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me."

In Islam, you don't need a priest, a church, or a saint to reach God. You simply raise your hands and speak. He hears every whisper, every thought, every heartbeat.

Shirk — The Only Unforgivable Sin

Shirk (شِرك) means associating partners with Allah — worshipping anything or anyone alongside Him. It is the only sin that Allah says He will not forgive if a person dies upon it:

Quran 4:48

Innal laaha laa yaghfiru ai yushraka bihee wa yaghfiru maa doona dhaalika limai yashaaa'

"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills."

This is why Tawheed is not just one belief among many in Islam — it is the foundation of everything. Every prophet was sent with the same core message: worship God alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Allah?
Allah is the Arabic word for "The God" — the one, unique, all-powerful Creator of the universe. He is the same God worshipped by Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews also use the word "Allah" to refer to God. Muslims believe Allah has no partners, no children, no equals, no gender, and no physical form. He is beyond human comprehension yet closer to each person than their own jugular vein (Quran 50:16).
Is Allah the same as the Christian God?
Muslims believe Allah is the same God worshipped by Christians and Jews — the God of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. The difference is in theology, not identity. Islam rejects the Trinity and the idea that God has a son, teaching instead that God is absolutely One (Tawheed). The Quran says: "Say, He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent" (Quran 112:1-4).
What is Tawheed?
Tawheed (التوحيد) is the Islamic concept of the absolute oneness of God. It is the single most important concept in Islam — the foundation of everything. Tawheed has three aspects: (1) Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah — Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of all things; (2) Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah — Allah alone deserves worship; (3) Tawheed al-Asma wa's-Sifat — Allah's names and attributes are unique to Him. Shirk (associating partners with God) is the opposite of Tawheed and the only sin Allah says He will not forgive.
Does Allah have 99 names?
Yes. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "Allah has 99 names — whoever memorizes and understands them will enter Paradise" (Sahih Al-Bukhari 2736). These names describe Allah's attributes: Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful), Al-Malik (The King), As-Salam (The Source of Peace), Al-Khaliq (The Creator), Al-Ghaffar (The Forgiver), and many more. The "99" does not limit God's names — it simply highlights the ones revealed to us.
