The Bible and the Quran

Two scriptures, shared prophets, shared stories — but fundamental differences in theology. Here is a respectful, honest comparison from the Islamic perspective.

What Does Islam Say About the Bible?

Muslims believe that God sent multiple revelations throughout history:

Tawrat (Torah)التوراة

At-Tawraah

Given to Musa (Moses)

Zabur (Psalms)الزبور

Az-Zaboor

Given to Dawud (David)

Injeel (Gospel)الإنجيل

Al-Injeel

Given to Isa (Jesus)

Quranالقرآن

Al-Qur'aan

Given to Muhammad (ﷺ)

Muslims respect the original Torah and Gospel as divine revelations. However, they believe these texts were altered over time — through translation, editing, and human interpretation. The Quran came as the final, preserved revelation to confirm the truth in earlier scriptures and correct what was changed.

Quran 5:48

Wa anzalnaaa ilaikal Kitaaba bilhaqqi musaddiqal limaa baina yadaihi minal Kitaabi wa muhaiminan 'alaih

"And We have revealed to you the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it."

Key Theological Differences

God

Bible / Christianity

Trinity — Father, Son, Holy Spirit. God is three persons in one.

Quran / Islam

Tawheed — God is absolutely One. No trinity, no partners, no incarnation. "Say: He is Allah, the One" (112:1).

Jesus

Bible / Christianity

Son of God, divine, part of the Trinity. Crucified and resurrected for humanity's sins.

Quran / Islam

Mighty prophet and Messiah, born of a virgin, but NOT God. Not crucified — raised alive by Allah. Will return before the Day of Judgment.

Original Sin

Bible / Christianity

Adam and Eve's sin is inherited by all humanity. Salvation comes through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross.

Quran / Islam

Adam sinned, repented, and was forgiven by Allah directly (2:37). No original sin is inherited. Every person is born sinless and accountable only for their own deeds.

Salvation

Bible / Christianity

Through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Grace, not works, saves.

Quran / Islam

Through sincere belief in One God (Tawheed) combined with righteous deeds. Allah's mercy is the ultimate decider. No human sacrifice needed — God forgives directly.

Mary

Bible / Christianity

Mother of Jesus. Honored but not a major theological figure. Not mentioned by name in some Gospels.

Quran / Islam

Maryam is the most honored woman in Islam. Mentioned by name 34 times — more than in the entire New Testament. An entire surah (Chapter 19) is named after her.

Preservation

Bible / Christianity

Written by multiple authors over ~1,500 years. Translated from Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Various versions exist (KJV, NIV, etc.).

Quran / Islam

Revealed to one prophet over 23 years. Preserved in original Arabic — memorized by millions word-for-word. Only one version exists worldwide.

Shared Prophets & Stories

Noah and the FloodGenesis 6-9Quran 11:25-49, 71:1-28

Moses and PharaohExodus 1-14Quran 20:9-98, 26:10-68, 28:3-43
The Story of JosephGenesis 37-50Quran 12:1-111 (entire surah)
David and Solomon1 & 2 Samuel, 1 KingsQuran 21:78-82, 27:15-44, 34:10-14

The Day of JudgmentRevelation, Matthew 25Quran 75, 81, 82, 84, 99, 101

The presence of these shared stories is seen by Muslims as evidence that both scriptures came from the same divine source — God. The differences are attributed to human alteration of earlier texts.

Preservation — The Key Difference

One of Islam's strongest claims is the perfect preservation of the Quran. Unlike the Bible — which exists in numerous versions (KJV, NIV, ESV, etc.) translated from multiple source languages — the Quran exists in one version, in its original Arabic, unchanged since the 7th century.

Today, over 10 million people (called huffaz) have the entire Quran memorized cover to cover. If every written copy were destroyed tomorrow, the Quran could be reconstructed perfectly from memory alone. No other book in human history can make this claim.

Allah promised this preservation directly:

Quran 15:9

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ

Innaa Nahnu nazzalnadh-Dhikra wa innaa lahoo lahaafizoon

"Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran, and indeed, We will be its guardian."

A Message of Respect

Islam does not teach hostility toward Christians or Jews. The Quran calls them "People of the Book" and acknowledges that among them are sincere believers who do good:

Quran 3:113-114

"Among the People of the Book is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during the night and prostrating. They believe in Allah and the Last Day and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous."

The purpose of this page is not to attack or belittle any faith — but to present the Islamic perspective honestly and respectfully. Islam invites all people to study, compare, and arrive at the truth through knowledge and sincerity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Islam recognize the Bible?
Yes — partially. Muslims believe in the original revelations given to Moses (Torah/Tawrat), David (Psalms/Zabur), and Jesus (Gospel/Injeel). However, Muslims believe these original texts were altered over time by human hands. The Quran came as the final, preserved revelation to confirm what was originally revealed and correct what was changed. So Muslims respect the Bible as originally divine but do not accept the current texts as fully authentic.
What are the similarities between the Bible and Quran?
Major similarities include: (1) Both teach monotheism — belief in one God, (2) Both share many of the same prophets — Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus, (3) Both describe creation, the flood of Noah, the Exodus, and the story of Joseph in remarkable detail, (4) Both teach the Day of Judgment, Heaven and Hell, (5) Both emphasize prayer, charity, and moral conduct, (6) Both honor Mary (Maryam) and Jesus' miraculous birth.
What are the key differences between the Bible and Quran?
Key differences include: (1) God — Islam rejects the Trinity; the Quran teaches God is absolutely One, (2) Jesus — Muslims believe he was a prophet, not God or the Son of God, (3) Crucifixion — the Quran says Jesus was not crucified but was raised to heaven, (4) Original Sin — Islam rejects the concept; Adam repented and was forgiven, (5) Preservation — Muslims believe the Quran is preserved word-for-word in its original Arabic, while the Bible has been translated and edited over centuries, (6) Authorship — the Quran claims to be the direct word of God, while the Bible is considered inspired writings by multiple human authors.
Is the Quran a copy of the Bible?
No. While both share stories and prophets, the Quran presents them differently and often corrects the biblical narrative from the Islamic perspective. The Quran also contains entirely unique content not found in the Bible. Muslims believe both the Bible (originally) and the Quran came from the same divine source — God — which explains the similarities. The Quran explicitly states it came to confirm the truth in earlier scriptures and correct human alterations.
