About Surah Ad-Dukhan
Surah Ad-Dukhan (Arabic: الدخان), meaning "The Smoke", is the 44th chapter of the Quran and contains 59 verses. It is one of the Ha Mim surahs, revealed in Makkah at a time when the Quraysh persisted in rejecting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The surah is a warning: the revelation came down on a blessed night, and those who deny it will face a punishment as real as the one that overtook Pharaoh.
It opens by swearing by the clear Book, sent down on a blessed night in which every wise matter is made distinct. Verse 10 tells the Prophet to watch for the Day when the sky brings a visible smoke covering the people, and the deniers are warned of "the greatest assault." It then recalls Pharaoh's people, who left behind gardens, springs and crops when they drowned, and for whom neither heaven nor earth wept. It names the people of Tubba' among the nations destroyed, then contrasts the tree of Zaqqum, food of the sinner, with the righteous in gardens and springs, where they will taste no death after the first. It ends by saying that the Quran has been made easy in the Prophet's tongue so that people may take heed, and tells him to wait, for they too are waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Ad-Dukhan
- What is the smoke in Surah Ad-Dukhan?
- Commentators give two main explanations. Ibn Mas'ud, in a report in Sahih al-Bukhari, explained it as the severe famine that struck the Quraysh, when hunger made the sky appear to them like smoke, while others understood it as a sign still to come before the Hour. The smoke is also listed among the major signs of the Hour in a hadith in Sahih Muslim.
- Which night is the blessed night in Surah Ad-Dukhan?
- Most commentators identify it as Laylat al-Qadr, since Surah Al-Qadr says the Quran was sent down on that night and Surah Al-Baqarah says it was sent down in Ramadan. A minority view linking it to the middle of Sha'ban was rejected by many leading commentators.
- Is there a special reward for reciting Surah Ad-Dukhan on Thursday or Friday night?
- Reports promising special forgiveness for reciting it on those nights are graded weak by hadith specialists, so they should not be treated as established sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Reciting it at any time remains a rewarding act, as with any part of the Quran.
