About Surah Al-Humazah
Surah Al-Humazah (Arabic: الهمزة), meaning "The Traducer", is the 104th chapter of the Quran and has 9 verses. It was revealed in Makkah during the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), at a time when the believers faced mockery from some of the city's wealthy men. It is a warning to those who slander and mock others and who put their trust in wealth.
The surah opens with a woe upon every humazah and lumazah, the one who slanders people and mocks them, who gathers wealth and counts it again and again, thinking that his wealth will make him live forever. It answers firmly: no, he will surely be thrown into al-Hutamah, the Crusher. And what will make you know what the Crusher is? It is the Fire of Allah, kindled, which rises over the hearts, closed in upon them in extended columns. Some commentators note that the Fire reaching the hearts fits the sin, since contempt for others and trust in wealth both begin in the heart.
