About Surah Ar-Rahman
Surah Ar-Rahman (Arabic: الرحمن), meaning "The Beneficent" or "The Most Merciful", is the 55th chapter of the Quran and contains 78 verses. Most commentators hold it was revealed in Makkah, though some reports place it in Madinah. Addressing humankind and the jinn together, it lists Allah's countless favors upon both and asks how anyone could deny them.
It opens with the name Ar-Rahman, then states that He taught the Quran, created man and taught him eloquence. It moves through the sun and moon running by precise calculation, the balance that must not be violated, the fruits of the earth, man created from clay and jinn from smokeless fire, the two seas divided by a barrier, and ships like mountains. Interwoven with these favors is the refrain, "So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?", which occurs 31 times and is addressed in the dual form to humans and jinn. The surah declares that everyone on earth will perish while the Face of the Lord remains, then describes the Day of Judgment and two pairs of gardens promised to those who fear standing before their Lord. It ends by blessing the name of the Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor. Verse 33 challenges jinn and mankind to pass beyond the heavens and the earth, which they cannot do without authority from Allah.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Ar-Rahman
- Why is "Which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?" repeated in Surah Ar-Rahman?
- The refrain occurs 31 times, each time after a favor or scene is described, so that the listener is asked again and again to acknowledge Allah's blessings. It uses the dual form, addressing humans and jinn together, and its repetition gives the surah its distinctive rhythm.
- Is Surah Ar-Rahman the "bride of the Quran"?
- That title comes from a report which hadith specialists grade weak, so it should not be attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as an established saying. The surah is loved on its own merits, for its beauty and its constant reminder of Allah's favors.
- Who is addressed as "you both" in Surah Ar-Rahman?
- The dual address refers to humankind and the jinn, the two kinds of beings accountable to Allah, as verse 33 makes explicit with "O company of jinn and mankind." The surah reminds both of the favors they have received and the judgment they will face.
