Tanzeelul Kitaabi 'laaraiba feehi mir rabbil 'aalameen
[This is] the revelation of the Book about which there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds.
- 3
Am yaqooloonaf taraahu bal huwal haqqu mir rabbika litunzira qawma maaa ataahum min nazeerim min qablika la'allahum yahtadoon
Or do they say, "He invented it"? Rather, it is the truth from your Lord, [O Muhammad], that you may warn a people to whom no warner has come before you [so] perhaps they will be guided.
- 4
Allaahul lazee khalaqas samaawaati wal arda wa maa bainahumaa fee sittati ayyaam;Thummas tawaa 'alal 'arsh; maa lakum min doonihee minw-wwaliyyinw-wala shafee'; afala tatazakkaroon
It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days; then He established Himself above the Throne. You have not besides Him any protector or any intercessor; so will you not be reminded?
- 5
Yudabbirul amra minas samaaa'i ilal ardi Thumma ya'ruju ilai Thumma ya'ruju ilaihi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoooo alfa sanatim mimmaa ta'uddoon
He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.
- 6
Zaalika 'aalimul ghaybi wa shahaadatil 'azeezur raheem
That is the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
- 7
Allazee ahsana kulla shai in khalaqa; wa bada a khalqal insaani min teen
Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay.
- 8
Thumma ja'ala naslahoo min sulaalatim mim maaa'immaheen
Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.
- 9
Thumma sawwaahu wa nafakha feehi mir roohihih; wa ja'ala lakumus sam'a wal-absaara wal-af'idah; taqaleelam maa tashkuroon
Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.
- 10
Wa qaalooo 'a-izaa dalalnaa fil ardi 'a-innaa lafee khalqin jadeed; bal hum biliqaaa'i rabbihim kaafirroon
And they say, "When we are lost within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation?" Rather, they are, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, disbelievers.
- 11
Qul yatawaffaakum malakul mawtil lazee wukkila bikum Thumma ilaa rabbikum turja'oon
Say, "The angel of death will take you who has been entrusted with you. Then to your Lord you will be returned."
- 12
Wa law taraaa izil mujrimoona naakisoo ru'oosihim 'inda rabbihim rabbanaaa absarnaa wa sami'naa farji'naa na'mal saalihan innaa mooqinoon
If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain."
- 13
Wa law shi'naa la-aatainaa kulla nafsin hudaahaa wa laakin haqqal qawlu minnee la amla'anna jahannama minal jinnati wannaasi ajma'een
And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me will come into effect [that] "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people all together.
- 14
Fazooqoo bimaa naseetum liqaaa'a yawminkum haaza innaa naseenaakum wa zooqoo 'azaabal khuldi bimaa kuntum ta'maloon
So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this, your Day; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do."
- 15
Innamaa yu'minu bi aayaatinal lazeena izaa zukkiroo bihaa kharroo sujjadanw wa sabbahoo bihamdi rabbihim wa hum laa yastakbiroon
Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.
- 16
Tatajaafaa junoobuhum 'anil madaaji'i yad'oona rabbahum khawfanw wa tama'anw wa mimmaa razaqnaahum yunfiqoon
They arise from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
- 17
Falaa ta'lamu nafsum maaa ukhfiya lahum min qurrati a'yunin jazaaa'am bimaa kaanoo ya'maloon
And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.
- 18
Afaman kaana mu'minan kaman kaana faasiqaa; laa yasta woon
Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.
- 19
Ammal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati falahum jannaatul maawa nuzulam bimaa kaanoo ya'maloon
As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.
- 20
Wa ammal lazeena fasaqoo famaawaahumn Naaru kullamaaa araadooo any yakhrujoo minhaaa u'eedoo feehaa wa qeela lahum zooqoo 'zaaaban Naaril lazee kuntum bihee tukazziboon
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."
- 21
And we will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will repent.
- 22
Wa man azlamu mimman zukkira bi aayaati rabbihee summa a'rada 'anhaa; innaa minal mujrimeena muntaqimmon
And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.
- 23
Wa laqad aayainaa Moosal Kitaaba falaa takun fee miryatim mil liqaaa'ihee wa ja'alnaahu hudal li Baneee Israaa'eel
And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting. And we made the Torah guidance for the Children of Israel.
- 24
Wa ja'alnaa minhum a'immatany yahdoona bi amrinaa lammaa sabaroo wa kaanoo bi aayaatinaa yooqinoon
And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.
- 25
Inna rabbaka huwa yafsilu bainahum yawmal qiyaamati feemaa kaanoo feehi yakhtalifoon
Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
- 26
Awalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknaa min qablihim minal qurooni yamshoona fee zaalika la aayaatin afalaa yasma'oon
Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, [as] they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear?
- 27
Awalam yaraw annaa nasooqul maaa'a ilal lardil juruzi fanukhriju bihee zar'an taakulu minhu an'aamuhum wa anfusuhum afalaa yubsiroon
Have they not seen that We drive the water [in clouds] to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see?
- 28
Wa yaqooloona mataa haazal fat hu in kuntum saadiqeen
And they say, "When will be this conquest, if you should be truthful?"
- 29
Qul yawmal fat hi laa yanfa'ul lazeena kafarooo eemaanuhum wa laa hum yunzaroon
Say, [O Muhammad], "On the Day of Conquest the belief of those who had disbelieved will not benefit them, nor will they be reprieved."
- 30
Fa a'rid 'anhum wantazir innahum muntazirron
So turn away from them and wait. Indeed, they are waiting.
About Surah As-Sajdah
Surah As-Sajdah (Arabic: السجدة), meaning "The Prostration", is the 32nd chapter of the Quran and contains 30 verses. It was revealed in Makkah, in a period when the Quraysh claimed that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had invented the revelation and denied that the dead would rise. It insists that the Quran is truly from the Lord of the worlds, and that the believer's proper response to it is humble prostration.
After the opening letters Alif Lam Mim, it affirms that the Book is beyond doubt, then describes the creation of the heavens and earth in six days and the creation of man from clay, followed by his offspring from a humble fluid. It answers those who doubt resurrection, mentioning the angel of death who takes each soul, and shows the wrongdoers hanging their heads before their Lord. Verse 15, which gives the surah its name, describes true believers as those who fall down in prostration when reminded of Allah's verses, and verse 16 praises those who leave their beds to call on their Lord in fear and hope. Verse 17 says no soul knows the delights hidden for them. Authentic reports describe the Prophet reciting it in the Fajr prayer on Fridays, a practice many Muslims keep today.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah As-Sajdah
- Why is Surah As-Sajdah recited in Fajr on Friday?
- Reports in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim describe the Prophet (peace be upon him) reciting As-Sajdah and Al-Insan in the Fajr prayer on Friday. Many imams follow this sunnah today, and some scholars explain that the two surahs remind worshippers of creation, resurrection and the Hereafter.
- Is there a prostration in Surah As-Sajdah?
- Yes. Verse 15 is a place of the prostration of recitation (sajdat at-tilawah), and the reciter prostrates on reaching it. Most scholars regard this prostration as a sunnah, while the Hanafi school holds it to be wajib.
- What does verse 17 of Surah As-Sajdah mean?
- It says that no soul knows what joy has been hidden for the believers as a reward for their deeds. In a hadith qudsi in Sahih al-Bukhari, Allah says He has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no heart has imagined, and this verse is cited alongside it.
