Quran 24:35 — "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth." One of the most beautiful and profound parables in the entire Quran.

Allaahu noorus samaawaati wal ard; masalu noorihee kamishkaatin feehaa misbaah; almisbaahu fee zujaajatin azzujaajatu ka annahaa kawkabun durriyyuny yooqadu min shajaratim mubaarakatin zaitoonatil laa shariqiyyatinw wa laa gharbiyyatiny yakaadu zaituhaa yudeee'u wa law lam tamsashu naar; noorun 'alaa noor; yahdil laahu linoorihee mai yashaaa'; wa yadribul laahul amsaala linnaas; wallaahu bikulli shai'in Aleem

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.

The Parable Explained

The Niche (Mishkat)

المشكاة

The believer's chest — a small enclosed space that concentrates and intensifies light. The niche protects the flame from wind, just as faith is protected in a sincere heart.

The Lamp (Misbah)

المصباح

Knowledge and faith — the source of illumination. Without the lamp, the niche is dark. Without faith, the heart has no light.

The Glass (Zujajah)

الزجاجة

The purified heart — so clear and refined by faith that it shines "like a brilliant star." The glass both protects the lamp and amplifies its light.

The Blessed Olive Tree

شجرة مباركة زيتونة

Divine revelation — the fuel that keeps the lamp burning. "Neither of the east nor of the west" means it is universal, not limited to any one people or direction.

Oil That Almost Glows

يكاد زيتها يضيء

The truth (fitrah) is so natural and pure that it nearly illuminates on its own, even without the "fire" of formal instruction. The human heart instinctively recognizes truth.

Light Upon Light

نور على نور

The light of revelation upon the light of natural instinct. Faith confirmed by evidence, guided by the Quran, amplified by practice — layers of light building upon each other.

Scholarly Reflections

Ibn Kathir explained that "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth" means He is the guide of the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth. Without His light, there would be no guidance, no knowledge, and no direction.

Al-Ghazali wrote an entire treatise on this verse — Mishkat al-Anwar (The Niche of Lights) — exploring the multiple levels of light: physical light that the eye sees, intellectual light that the mind perceives, and divine light that the soul experiences.

Ibn al-Qayyim noted that the verse uses the word "mathal" (parable/example) of His light, not the light itself — because Allah's actual light is beyond human comprehension. The parable gives us a glimpse, not the full reality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Verse of Light in the Quran?
The Verse of Light (Ayat An-Nur) is Quran 24:35. It begins with "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth" and presents a parable comparing divine light to a lamp in a niche, within glass, lit from a blessed olive tree. It concludes with the phrase "Light upon light" (Noor ala Noor), describing how Allah guides whom He wills to His light.
What does "Light upon Light" (Noor ala Noor) mean?
Scholars explain "Light upon Light" (Noor ala Noor) as layers of divine guidance: the light of the Quran upon the light of natural human instinct (fitrah), or the light of faith upon the light of evidence. Each layer of light amplifies the other, creating a radiance that guides the believer closer to Allah.
What is the meaning of the parable in the Verse of Light?
The parable describes: (1) A niche (mishkat) — the believer's chest/heart; (2) A lamp (misbah) — faith and knowledge; (3) Glass like a brilliant star — the heart purified by faith, shining brightly; (4) A blessed olive tree — the source is pure revelation, neither eastern nor western; (5) Oil that almost glows by itself — truth so clear it nearly illuminates without instruction. Together: divine light enters a receptive heart and produces radiant faith.
