Healing Verses of the Quran (آيات الشفاء)

The 6 Shifa Verses — every verse in the Quran where Allah mentions healing (شفاء). Used for Ruqyah, the Prophetic practice of Quranic healing.

Shifa Verse 1 · At-Tawbah 9:14

Qaatiloohum yu'az zibhumul laahu bi aideekum wa yukhzihim wa yansurkum 'alaihim wa yashfi sudoora qawmim mu 'mineen

Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and satisfy the breasts of a believing people

Allah heals the hearts and chests of the believers — emotional and spiritual healing through divine justice.

Shifa Verse 2 · Yunus 10:57

Yaaa aiyuhan naasu qad jaaa'atkum maw 'izatum mir Rabbikum wa shifaaa'ul limaa fis sudoori wa hudanw wa rahmatul lilmu'mineen

O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.

The Quran itself is described as a healing (shifa) for what is in the hearts — doubt, anxiety, grief, and spiritual illness.

Shifa Verse 3 · An-Nahl 16:69

Summma kulee min kullis samaraati faslukee subula Rabbiki zululaa; yakhruju mim butoonihaa sharaabum mukh talifun alwaanuhoo feehi shifaaa'ul linnaas, innna fee zaalika la Aayatal liqawminy yatafakkaroon

Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]. There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.

Honey — a physical healing from Allah. The Quran connects spiritual and physical healing as signs of His mercy.

Shifa Verse 4 · Al-Isra 17:82

Wa nunazzilu minal quraani maa huwa shifaaa'unw wa rahmatul lilmu;mineena wa laa yazeeduz zaalimeena illaa khasaaraa

And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.

The most direct verse — Allah explicitly states the Quran is sent down as healing (shifa) and mercy for those who believe.

Shifa Verse 5 · Ash-Shuara 26:80

Wa izaa mardtu fahuwa yashfeen

And when I am ill, it is He who cures me

Ibrahim (AS) declares that only Allah can cure illness. The ultimate acknowledgment that all healing comes from Allah alone.

Shifa Verse 6 · Fussilat 41:44

Wa law ja'alnaahu Qur-aanan A'jamiyyal laqaaloo law laa fussilat Aayaatuhoo 'a A'jamiyyunw wa 'Arabiyy; qul huwa lillazeena aamanoo hudanw wa shifaaa'un

And if We had made it a non-Arabic Quran, they would have said, "Why are its verses not explained in detail?" Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure."

For the believers, the Quran serves as both guidance (huda) and cure (shifa) — addressing both direction and healing.

The Prophet's Practice of Quranic Healing

Aisha (RA) reported: "When the Prophet (ﷺ) fell ill, he would recite the Mu'awwidhat (Al-Falaq and An-Nas), blow on his hands, and wipe them over his body." (Sahih Al-Bukhari 5735)

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (RA) narrated that some companions used Surah Al-Fatiha to heal a tribal chief who had been stung. When they told the Prophet (ﷺ), he smiled and said: "How did you know that it is a Ruqyah?" (Sahih Al-Bukhari 5736)

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said: "Make use of the two cures — honey and the Quran." (Ibn Majah) — combining physical and spiritual healing.

How to Practice Ruqyah

  • 1.Perform wudu (ablution) and face the Qiblah if possible
  • 2.Recite Al-Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, the Three Quls, and the 6 Shifa verses
  • 3.Blow gently into your cupped hands after reciting
  • 4.Wipe your hands over your body or the body of the sick person
  • 5.Repeat regularly with sincerity and trust in Allah
  • 6.Continue medical treatment alongside Ruqyah — Islam encourages both

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 6 healing verses (Ayat Ash-Shifa) of the Quran?
The 6 Shifa (healing) verses are: 9:14 (healing the hearts of believers), 10:57 (healing for what is in the breasts), 16:69 (healing in honey), 17:82 (the Quran as healing and mercy), 26:80 (Allah is the One who cures), and 41:44 (guidance and cure for believers). These are the six verses where the word "shifa" (healing/cure) appears in the Quran.
How to use Quran for healing (Ruqyah)?
Ruqyah is the Prophetic practice of using Quran for healing. Recite these verses with sincerity, blow gently on yourself or the sick person, and place trust in Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ) used Al-Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, the last two verses of Baqarah, and the Three Quls alongside these Shifa verses. Aisha (RA) reported that the Prophet would recite Quran and blow on himself when ill (Bukhari).
Can the Quran heal physical illness?
Muslims believe the Quran provides both spiritual and physical healing. The Prophet (ﷺ) approved using Al-Fatiha as a cure (Sahih Bukhari 5736) and the Shifa verses address both types of healing. However, Ruqyah should complement medical treatment, not replace it. Islam encourages seeking both spiritual and medical remedies.
