Foundations of Faith

The pillars upon which Islam is built

Actions Are By Intentions

Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab

#1

Innamal-a'malu bin-niyyat, wa innama li-kulli imri'in ma nawa. Faman kanat hijratuhu ilallahi wa rasulihi, fa-hijratuhu ilallahi wa rasulih. Wa man kanat hijratuhu li-dunya yuseebuha aw imra'atin yankihuha, fa-hijratuhu ila ma hajara ilayh.

Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended. So whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration was for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever emigrated for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his emigration was for whatever he emigrated for.

Reflection: This is considered the most important hadith in Islam. Scholars say it accounts for one-third of all Islamic knowledge.

The Five Pillars of Islam

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar

#2

Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, paying the Zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House (Hajj), and fasting in Ramadan.

The Hadith of Jibreel

Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab

#3

An ta'budallaha ka-annaka tarahu, fa-in lam takun tarahu fa-innahu yarak.

Worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you.

Reflection: This describes Ihsan (excellence) — the highest level of faith. Jibreel (Gabriel) came in human form to teach the companions.

MuslimNawawi 2

Islam is Ease

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#4

Innad-deena yusr, wa lan yushaddad-deena ahadun illa ghalabah, fa-saddidu wa qaribu wa abshiru.

Indeed, the religion is ease, and no one will ever overburden himself in religion except that it will overcome him. So be moderate, seek what is close to perfection, and rejoice.

Remove Harm from the Path

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#7

Al-imanu bid'un wa sab'oona shu'bah, fa-afdaluha qawlu la ilaha illallah, wa adnaha imatatul-adha 'anit-tareeq, wal-haya'u shu'batun minal-iman.

Faith has over seventy branches. The highest is to say "There is no god but Allah." The lowest is to remove something harmful from the road. And modesty is a branch of faith.

Do Not Be Angry

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#8

La taghdhab.

A man said to the Prophet: "Advise me." He said: "Do not get angry." The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet said: "Do not get angry."

Reflection: This short but powerful advice was given repeatedly — showing that controlling anger is one of the most important qualities a Muslim can develop.

BukhariNawawi 16

Gentleness in All Things

Narrated by Aisha

#9

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Aqrabu ma yakunul-'abdu min Rabbihi wa huwa sajidun, fa-akthirud-du'a'.

The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration (sujud), so increase your supplications (dua) in it.

Voluntary Deeds of Love

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#12

Wa ma yazalu 'abdi yataqarrabu ilayya bin-nawafili hatta uhibbahu, fa-idha ahbabtuhu kuntu sam'ahul-ladhi yasma'u bihi, wa basarahul-ladhi yubsiru bih.

My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary deeds until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees...

Reflection: This is a Hadith Qudsi — words of Allah narrated by the Prophet. It shows how voluntary worship elevates a person beyond obligation.

BukhariNawawi 38

Guard the Five Prayers

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud

#13

Ar-rahimuna yarhamuhumu-Rahman, irhamu man fil-ardi yarhamkum man fis-sama'.

The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heavens will show mercy to you.

TirmidhiTirmidhi 1924

A Woman and a Thirsty Dog

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#17

Ma naqasat sadaqatun min mal, wa ma zadallahu 'abdan bi-'afwin illa 'izza, wa ma tawada'a ahadun lillahi illa rafa'ahullah.

A dog was circling a well, nearly dying of thirst. A woman of ill repute from the Children of Israel saw it, removed her shoe, and drew water for it. She was forgiven because of that.

Reflection: This hadith shows that Allah's mercy is vast. Even a small act of kindness — to an animal — can erase a lifetime of sins when done sincerely.

Bukhari & MuslimBukhari 3321

Paradise Lies at Her Feet

Narrated by Mu'awiyah ibn Jahima

#18

Feed the Hungry

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#20

Wa la tamshi fil-ardi marahan innaka lan takhruqal-arda wa lan tablughal-jibala tula.

Allah will say on the Day of Judgement: "O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you did not feed Me." He will say: "How could I feed You when You are the Lord of the worlds?" Allah will say: "Did you not know that My servant so-and-so asked you for food but you did not feed him?"

Reflection: A Hadith Qudsi reminding us that serving others is serving Allah.

Turn Back to Allah

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

#31

Law annakum tawakkaluna 'alallahi haqqa tawakkulihi larazaqakum kama yarzuqut-tayr, taghdoo khimasan wa taroohu bitana.

Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than one of you would be if he found his lost camel in the middle of a desert.

Reflection: Imagine losing everything in a vast desert — your water, food, transport — and then finding it. That is how much Allah rejoices when you turn back to Him.

Bukhari & MuslimMuslim 2747

Don't Despair of Allah's Mercy

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

Ad-dunya sijnul-mu'mini wa jannatul-kafir.

#33

Ad-dunya sijnul-mu'mini wa jannatul-kafir.

This world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever.

Reflection: This doesn't mean believers should be miserable. It means compared to the Paradise awaiting them, this world feels limited. The best is yet to come.

MuslimMuslim 2956

The Ummah is One Body

Narrated by Nu'man ibn Bashir

#34

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar

#35

The Virtue of Gathering

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#36

Patience & Gratitude

Finding strength in every trial

How Wonderful is the Believer

Narrated by Suhaib

#37

'Ajaban li-amril-mu'min, inna amrahu kullahu lahu khayr, wa laysa dhalika li-ahadin illal-il-mu'min. In asabat-hu sarra'u shakara fakana khayran lahu, wa in asabat-hu darra'u sabara fakana khayran lah.

How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all his affairs are good — and this is only for the believer. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him.

Reflection: This hadith teaches that a believer wins in every situation. Gratitude in ease, patience in hardship — both are rewarded.

MuslimMuslim 2999

With Hardship Comes Ease

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

#38

Kun fid-dunya ka-annaka ghareebun aw 'abiru sabeel.

Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler.

Reflection: Travelers pack light and don't get attached to temporary stops. This hadith teaches us to focus on what truly lasts.

Take Advantage of Five

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas

#40

Ightanim khamsan qabla khams: shababbaka qabla haramik, wa sihhataka qabla saqamik, wa ghinaka qabla faqrik, wa faraghaka qabla shughlik, wa hayataka qabla mawtik.

Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your busyness, and your life before your death.

HakimHakim 7846

What is a Hadith?

A hadith (Arabic: حَدِيث) is a record of the words, actions, and silent approvals of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Together with the Quran, hadiths form the foundation of Islamic guidance.

Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are the two most authentic hadith collections, compiled by Imam al-Bukhari (810–870 CE) and Imam Muslim (815–875 CE). They verified each hadith through rigorous chains of narration.

The 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi is a beloved compilation by Imam al-Nawawi (1233–1277 CE) that captures the essential principles of Islam in just 42 hadiths. It is one of the most studied texts in Islamic education worldwide.
