About Surah Al-Adiyat
Surah Al-Adiyat (Arabic: العاديات), meaning "The Courser", is the 100th chapter of the Quran and has 11 verses. It was revealed in Makkah in the early years of the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It sets human ingratitude toward Allah and the love of wealth against the certainty of the Resurrection.
The surah opens with vivid oaths by charging steeds: panting as they run, striking sparks with their hooves, raiding at dawn, raising clouds of dust and plunging into the midst of the enemy. Most commentators understand these as war horses, while some early commentators understood them as the camels of pilgrims. After these oaths comes the point: man is ungrateful to his Lord, he himself is a witness to that, and he is intense in his love of wealth. The surah then asks: does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered, and what is hidden in the hearts is brought out, their Lord will on that Day be fully aware of them? The surah places the image of animals that give everything for their riders beside the human being who is ungrateful to the One who created and provides for him, and leaves the contrast for the reader to reflect on.
