About Surah Az-Zalzalah
Surah Az-Zalzalah (Arabic: الزلزلة), meaning "The Earthquake", is the 99th chapter of the Quran and has 8 verses. Scholars differ on where it was revealed; the mushaf labels it Madinan. The surah describes the Day of Judgment, when the earth will be shaken, will reveal what happened upon it, and every deed, however small, will be seen.
The surah describes the earth shaken with its final quake and throwing out its burdens, while man asks in alarm what is happening to it. On that Day the earth will report its news, because its Lord has inspired it to do so. People will then come forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds. The surah ends with two verses that sum up personal accountability: whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked about donkeys, he said that nothing specific had been revealed to him about them except this unique, all-encompassing verse, and recited these words, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Az-Zalzalah
- How small is an atom's weight in Surah Az-Zalzalah?
- The Arabic word dharrah refers to the smallest thing imaginable, such as a tiny ant or a speck of dust. Verses 7 and 8 teach that even the smallest good deed and the smallest bad deed will be brought forward and seen on the Day of Judgment.
- How will the earth "report its news"?
- Verse 4 says that on that Day the earth will tell its news, and verse 5 explains that this is because its Lord has inspired it. Many commentators understand this as the earth bearing witness to the deeds people did upon it.
- Why are the last verses of Az-Zalzalah called all-encompassing?
- Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about donkeys, a matter on which nothing specific had been revealed to him, he recited these verses and called them unique and all-encompassing. They state a principle that covers every deed a person does.
