About Surah Al-Mursalat
Surah Al-Mursalat (Arabic: المرسلات), meaning "The Emissaries", is the 77th chapter of the Quran and has 50 verses. It was revealed in Makkah, while the Quraysh were denying the Day of Judgment and the message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The surah's message is blunt: what people have been promised will certainly come to pass, and denying it leads to ruin.
It opens with oaths by those sent forth in succession and those that blow violently, which commentators explain as winds, as angels, or both, and then declares that what you are promised will surely occur. It describes the stars extinguished, the sky split open, the mountains blown away and the messengers gathered at their appointed time. After each proof and scene, the refrain "Woe, that Day, to the deniers" returns, ten times in all. The proofs include the fate of earlier nations, man's creation from a humble fluid, and the earth as a place that holds the living and the dead. The deniers are sent to a shadow that gives no shade, amid sparks like great castles, while the righteous enjoy shade, springs and fruits. It ends by asking in what message after this they will believe.
Main Themes of Surah Al-Mursalat
- The certainty of what has been promised
- The repeated refrain of woe to the deniers

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Al-Mursalat
- How many times is "Woe, that Day, to the deniers" repeated in Surah Al-Mursalat?
- The refrain occurs ten times, at verses 15, 19, 24, 28, 34, 37, 40, 45, 47 and 49. Its return after each argument and scene drives home that every proof leaves the denier with less excuse.
- What are the Mursalat in the opening verses?
- The opening verses swear by those sent forth and several related groups. Commentators have explained them as winds sent in succession, as angels sent with Allah's commands, or as a combination of both, and the surah uses these oaths to affirm that the promised Day will come.
- Did the Prophet recite Surah Al-Mursalat in prayer?
- Yes. A report from Umm al-Fadl in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim states that she heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) recite Al-Mursalat in the sunset prayer, and that he did not lead them in prayer again after that before he passed away.
