About Surah Al-Insan

Surah Al-Insan (Arabic: الإنسان), meaning "The Man", is the 76th chapter of the Quran and has 31 verses. Scholars differ on where it was revealed; the mushaf labels it Madinan. It is also known as Surah Ad-Dahr, "Time", and by its opening words, Hal Ata. Its main concern is how man was created, guided and tested, and how gratitude and selfless generosity lead to an everlasting reward.

It opens by asking whether there came upon man a period of time when he was nothing worth mentioning, then explains that Allah created him from a mingled drop to test him, gave him hearing and sight, and showed him the way, whether he is grateful or ungrateful. After a brief warning to the disbelievers, much of the surah describes the righteous: they fulfill their vows, fear a Day of widespread evil, and give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan and the captive, seeking only the pleasure of Allah and wanting neither reward nor thanks. Their reward is described in rich detail, including shade, silk, silver vessels and a spring called Salsabil. The final verses tell the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to be patient, to remember his Lord morning and evening and to prostrate at night.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Al-Insan

Why is Surah Al-Insan recited on Friday morning?
It is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Insan in the dawn prayer on Fridays. Many imams follow this practice, and some scholars explain that both surahs speak of creation, resurrection and the Hereafter, themes suited to that day.
What does Surah Al-Insan say about feeding the poor?
Verses 8 and 9 praise those who give food, despite their own love for it, to the poor, the orphan and the captive, saying, "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude." These verses made generosity that seeks no recognition a hallmark of the righteous in Muslim teaching.
What is Salsabil in Surah Al-Insan?
Salsabil is the name of a spring in Paradise mentioned in verse 18, from which the righteous will be given a drink mixed with ginger. The verses around it describe the honor Allah has prepared for those who were grateful and patient.
