Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
About Surah Al-Muzzammil
Surah Al-Muzzammil (Arabic: المزمل), meaning "The Enshrouded One", is the 73rd chapter of the Quran and has 20 verses. It was revealed in Makkah, though some scholars consider verse 20 (and verses 10 and 11) Madinan, and it is generally placed among the early revelations, with scholars discussing its exact place in the order of revelation. It addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the one wrapped in his garments. The surah is about spiritual preparation: night prayer as training for the weighty message he was to carry.
The opening verses call him to rise in prayer for much of the night and to recite the Quran with measured, deliberate recitation (tartil), for Allah was about to send down upon him a weighty word. They teach that rising at night is more effective for the heart and more fitting for recitation, and command him to devote himself to Allah completely and bear the words of the deniers with gracious patience. The surah warns of a Day that will turn children gray and recalls Pharaoh's rejection of Musa. Its long final verse eases the burden: Allah knows that some are ill, some travel and some strive in His cause, so recite what is easy of the Quran, establish prayer and give zakah. A report from Aisha in Sahih Muslim explains that night prayer was required at first and later lightened by this closing verse.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Al-Muzzammil
- What does tartil mean in Surah Al-Muzzammil?
- Verse 4 commands the Prophet (peace be upon him) to recite the Quran with tartil, a slow, clear and measured recitation that gives each letter its due and leaves room to reflect on the meaning. It became the foundation of how the Quran is recited, and the rules of tajwid exist to serve it.
- Is night prayer obligatory according to Surah Al-Muzzammil?
- The opening verses commanded the Prophet to stand for much of the night, and a report from Aisha in Sahih Muslim states that it was at first an obligation for him and his Companions until the closing verse lightened it. The majority of scholars hold that for Muslims in general night prayer (qiyam al-layl) is now a highly recommended voluntary prayer.
- Who is the Muzzammil in Surah Al-Muzzammil?
- Al-Muzzammil, the one wrapped in garments, is the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), whom Allah addresses tenderly by describing his state rather than by name. Commentators relate the address to the early period of revelation and mention different explanations of the occasion.
