How the Prophet started his day

Using Miswak Upon Waking

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ would clean his teeth with a miswak (tooth stick) whenever he woke up. This was one of his most consistent habits.

Lawlâ an ashuQQa 'alâ ummatee la-amaRtuhum bi-as-siwâki 'inda kulli Salâh.

Were it not that I would burden my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the miswak before every prayer.

Try today: Use a miswak or brush your teeth first thing when you wake up. Keep one by your bedside as a reminder.

Bukhari & Muslim

Dua Upon Waking Up

Easy

The first words the Prophet ﷺ said upon waking were words of gratitude to Allah for restoring his life after sleep.

Al-Hamdu lillâhil-ladhee aHyânâ ba'damâ amâtanâ wa ilayhinnushooR.

All praise is due to Allah, who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Try today: Set a small note on your bedside table with this dua. Say it the moment you open your eyes, before reaching for your phone.

Bukhari

Praying Fajr on Time

Medium

The Prophet ﷺ never missed Fajr prayer and considered it the most important start to the day. He said it carries more reward than the entire world.

Rak'atâl-fajri khayRun minad-dunyâ wa mâ feehâ.

The two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it.

Try today: Set your alarm for Fajr time. Start by waking up even 5 minutes before Fajr and build the habit gradually.

Muslim

Praying Sunnah of Fajr at Home

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ was very keen on praying the two Sunnah rak'ahs of Fajr at home before going to the mosque. He never left them, even while traveling.

Rak'atâl-fajri khayRun minad-dunyâ wa mâ feehâ.

Muslim

Sitting in Dhikr Until Sunrise

Tirmidhi

Yâ ghulâmu sammillâha wa kul bi-yameenika wa kul mimmâ yaleek.

Bukhari & Muslim

Licking the Fingers After Eating

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ would lick his fingers after eating before wiping them, as the blessing (barakah) may be in any part of the food.

Idhâ akala aHadukum fal-yal'aQ aSâbi'ahu fa-innahu lâ yadree fee ayyihal-baRakah.

Try today: After finishing your meal, lick your fingers before washing them. This also prevents food waste.

Muslim

Saying Alhamdulillah After Eating

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ always praised Allah after finishing a meal. This simple act can lead to the forgiveness of sins.

Kullu ma'Roofin SadaQah.

Every act of goodness is charity.

Try today: Look for small opportunities to give today: a genuine compliment, holding the door, helping carry something, or giving a few coins to someone in need.

Dua Before Traveling

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ taught a comprehensive dua to recite when setting out on any journey, asking Allah for safety, ease, and righteousness.

Allâhumma innâ nas'aluka fee safarinâ hâdhal-biRRa wat-taQwâ wa minal-'amali mâ taRDâ.

O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness, taqwa, and deeds that please You.

Try today: Before any trip — whether a long flight or a drive to the next city — recite the travel dua. Save it on your phone for easy access.

Traveling in Groups

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ preferred traveling with companions and discouraged traveling alone, for companionship and safety.

Ar-Râkibu shayTânun war-Râkibâni shayTânâni wath-thalâthatu Rakb.

A single rider is a devil, two riders are two devils, but three are a traveling party.

Try today: When possible, travel with friends or family. If you must travel alone, keep someone informed of your route and stay in touch.

Saying Takbir on Ascending

Easy

When the Prophet ﷺ and his companions would climb a hill or ascend during travel, they would say "Allahu Akbar." When descending, they would say "SubhanAllah."

Kunnâ idhâ Sa'idnâ kabbaRnâ wa idhâ nazalnâ sabbaHnâ.

We used to say "Allahu Akbar" when ascending and "SubhanAllah" when descending.

Try today: When driving uphill or climbing stairs during a trip, say "Allahu Akbar." When going downhill, say "SubhanAllah." A beautiful way to remember Allah throughout your journey.

Dua Upon Returning Home

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ would say a specific dua when returning from a journey, praising Allah for a safe return.

Âyiboona tâ'iboona 'âbidoona li-Rabbinâ Hâmidoon.

We are returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

Try today: When heading home after a trip, recite this dua. It closes your journey with gratitude and worship.

Remembering Allah During the Journey

Easy

The Prophet ﷺ would fill his travel time with dhikr, dua, and reflection. He turned even ordinary travel into worship.

SubHânal-ladhee sakhkhaRa lanâ hâdhâ wa mâ kunnâ lahu muQrineen.

Glory be to Him who has subjected this (vehicle/animal) for us, and we could never have accomplished it by ourselves.

Try today: When you get into your car or board a plane, recite this verse (Quran 43:13). Turn off distractions and spend part of your journey in dhikr.

About the Sunnah

The Sunnah (Arabic: سُنَّة) refers to the way of life prescribed by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — his habits, actions, sayings, and silent approvals. It is the practical demonstration of how to live according to the Quran.

Why does it matter? The Quran commands believers to follow the Prophet ﷺ. Allah says: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a beautiful example” (Quran 33:21). The Sunnah is not just religious ritual — it covers eating, sleeping, greeting, hygiene, kindness, and every aspect of daily life.

How to start: You don’t need to adopt every sunnah at once. Pick one or two that resonate with you — perhaps saying “Bismillah” before eating or sleeping on your right side — and practice them consistently. Small, consistent actions are the most beloved to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Every sunnah on this page is backed by authentic hadith references from Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasai, and other reliable collections. We encourage you to learn the evidence behind each practice.
