Tazkiyah (تزكية) literally means “purification and growth.” In Islam, it refers to the lifelong process of purifying the soul (nafs) from spiritual diseases — arrogance, envy, greed, hypocrisy, heedlessness — and cultivating noble qualities like those described above.
Allah mentions tazkiyah as one of the core missions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):
“He it is Who raised among the unlettered ones a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.”
Quran 62:2
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said:
“There is a piece of flesh in the body — if it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.”
Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
Purifying the heart is not a one-time act but a daily struggle. It requires knowledge, practice, and constant turning back to Allah. The 8 qualities in this guide are a starting point — a map for the journey of the soul toward its Creator.
