Heart Purification

A journey through 8 spiritual qualities from the Quran and Sunnah — with verses, hadiths, reflections, and practical steps to purify and elevate your heart.

1 of 8

Gratitude (Shukr)

The quality that multiplies every blessing

Gratitude is recognizing that every good thing comes from Allah. It is not merely saying "Alhamdulillah" with the tongue, but feeling it in the heart and showing it through obedience. The grateful servant sees blessings even in hardship, and this transforms their entire outlook on life. Allah promises that gratitude leads to increase, while ingratitude leads to a painful punishment.

Quran

La'in shakartum la-azeedannakum, wa la'in kafartum inna 'adhabi la-shadeed.

If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.

Quran 14:7
Hadith

'Ajaban li-amril-mu'min, inna amrahu kullahu khayrun, wa laysa dhalika li-ahadin illal-mu'min. In asabathu sarra'u shakara fa-kana khayran lah, wa in asabathu darra'u sabara fa-kana khayran lah.

How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good, and this applies to no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him.

Sahih Muslim
Quran

Wa laqad atayna Luqmanal-hikmata anishkur lillah. Wa man yashkur fa-innama yashkuru li-nafsih. Wa man kafara fa-innallaha Ghaniyyun Hameed.

And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom, [saying], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Quran 31:12
Quran

Fadhkuruni adhkurkum washkuru li wa la takfuroon.

So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.

Quran 2:152

Reflect: When did you last stop to truly thank Allah for something you take for granted — your sight, your breath, your family?

Practical Steps:

  • Say Alhamdulillah 100 times every morning as a daily habit
  • Keep a gratitude journal — write 3 blessings each night before sleep
  • Thank a person who helped you today, even for something small
  • Notice one blessing you normally overlook and reflect on it deeply
2 of 8

Patience (Sabr)

The strength that carries you through every trial

Patience in Islam is not passive resignation — it is active, conscious endurance for the sake of Allah. It encompasses patience in worship, patience in avoiding sin, and patience during hardship. The Quran mentions patience over 90 times, and Allah promises that the patient will receive their reward "without account."

Quran

Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanu-sta'eenu bis-sabri was-salah. Innallaha ma'as-sabireen.

O you who believe! Seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

Quran 2:153
Hadith

Innamas-sabru 'indas-sadmatil-ula.

Patience is at the first strike of calamity.

Sahih al-Bukhari
Quran

O you who believe! Be patient, endure, remain stationed, and fear Allah that you may be successful.

Quran 3:200
Quran

Innama yuwaffas-sabiruna ajrahum bi-ghayri hisab.

Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.

Quran 39:10

Reflect: Think of a current difficulty in your life. Can you see it as a test from Allah that could elevate your rank if you remain patient?

Practical Steps:

  • Pause for 10 seconds before reacting to anything that angers you
  • Remember the patience of the Prophets — Ayyub, Yusuf, Muhammad (peace be upon them all)
  • When afflicted, say "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" and seek reward from Allah
  • Practice fasting outside Ramadan to build the muscle of patience

Sincerity (Ikhlas)

The soul of every good deed

Sincerity means doing every action purely for Allah, free from the desire for praise, recognition, or worldly gain. It is what transforms a mundane act into worship and a worship into acceptance. Without sincerity, even prayer and charity become hollow. The scholars said: "Ikhlas is to forget the creation by constantly looking at the Creator."

Quran

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.

Quran 98:5
Hadith

Innamal-a'malu bin-niyyat, wa innama li-kulli imri'in ma nawa.

Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended.

Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
Quran

Ala lillahid-deenul-khalis.

Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion.

Quran 39:3
Hadith

Indeed, Allah does not accept any deed except that which is done sincerely for Him and seeking His face.

Sunan an-Nasa'i

Reflect: Before your last good deed, did you check your intention? Were you doing it for Allah, or for people to see?

Practical Steps:

  • Check your intention before every action — ask "Am I doing this for Allah?"
  • Do secret good deeds that no one knows about except Allah
  • Avoid posting every act of worship on social media
  • Renew your intention throughout the day, especially during salah

Humility (Tawadu)

The quality beloved to Allah and despised by shaytaan

Humility is knowing your true place before Allah — that you are His servant, created from dust, entirely dependent on His mercy. It does not mean thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Arrogance was the first sin ever committed (by Iblis), and it is the disease that prevents a person from entering Paradise.

Quran

Wa 'ibadur-Rahmanil-ladhina yamshuna 'alal-ardi hawnan wa idha khatabahumul-jahiluna qalu salama.

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

Quran 25:63
Hadith

Ma naqasat sadaqatun min mal, wa ma zadallahu 'abdan bi-'afwin illa 'izza, wa ma tawada'a ahadun lillahi illa rafa'ahullah.

Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives except that Allah increases his honor. And no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him.

Sahih Muslim
Quran

And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

Quran 31:18
Quran

Wa la tamshi fil-ardi marahan innaka lan takhruqal-arda wa lan tablughal-jibala tula.

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.

Quran 17:37

Reflect: Is there anyone you look down upon — because of their status, appearance, or knowledge? How would the Prophet (peace be upon him) treat them?

Practical Steps:

  • Sit with those considered "less" in worldly status and learn from them
  • Avoid boasting about your achievements, knowledge, or worship
  • Serve others — carry groceries, clean the masjid, help a stranger
  • When praised, redirect it to Allah: "This is from the favor of my Lord"

Trust in Allah (Tawakkul)

Relying on Allah while taking every means

Tawakkul is trusting Allah with the outcome after you have done everything in your power. It is not laziness or passivity — it is tying your camel and then trusting Allah. It frees the heart from anxiety, because the one who truly relies on Allah knows that whatever happens is exactly what Allah decreed, and it is the best outcome for them.

Quran

Wa man yatawakkal 'alallahi fa-huwa hasbuh. Innallaha balighu amrih. Qad ja'alallahu li-kulli shay'in qadra.

And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

Quran 65:3
Hadith

Law annakum tawakkaluna 'alallahi haqqa tawakkulihi larazaqakum kama yarzuqut-tayr, taghdoo khimasan wa taroohu bitana.

If you relied on Allah as He should be relied upon, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds — they go out hungry in the morning and return full in the evening.

Sunan at-Tirmidhi
Quran

Fa-bima rahmatin minallahi linta lahum. Wa law kunta fazzan ghaleedhal-qalbi lanfaddu min hawlik. Fa'fu 'anhum wastaghfir lahum wa shawirhum fil-amr. Fa-idha 'azamta fa-tawakkal 'alallah. Innallaha yuhibbul-mutawakkileen.

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

Quran 3:159
Quran

Innamal-mu'minunal-ladhina idha dhukirallahu wajilat qulubuhum wa idha tuliyat 'alayhim ayatuhu zadathum imanan wa 'ala rabbihim yatawakkaloon.

The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.

Quran 8:2

Reflect: What are you anxious about right now? Have you done your best and then truly left the result to Allah?

Practical Steps:

  • Do your best preparation, then consciously say "I leave the result to Allah"
  • When anxious, recite "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel" (Allah is sufficient for us)
  • Reduce overthinking by replacing worry with dhikr and dua
  • Study the stories of Prophets who trusted Allah in impossible situations

Repentance (Tawbah)

The door that is always open

Repentance is returning to Allah after falling into sin. It requires three things: sincere regret, stopping the sin, and resolving never to return to it. Allah loves those who repent, and His mercy is greater than any sin. The door of tawbah is open until the sun rises from the west or until the soul reaches the throat at death.

Quran

Innallaha yaghfirudh-dhunuba jamee'a. Innahu Huwal-Ghafurur-Raheem.

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

Quran 39:53
Hadith

Lallahu ashaddu farahan bi-tawbati 'abdihi min ahadikum saqata 'ala ba'eerihi wa qad adallahu fi ardi falah.

Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than one of you who suddenly finds his camel laden with supplies after losing it in a barren land.

Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
Quran

Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanu tubu ilallahi tawbatan nasuha. 'Asa rabbukum an yukaffira 'ankum sayyi'atikum wa yudkhilakum jannatin tajri min tahtihal-anhar.

O you who believe, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow.

Quran 66:8
Quran

Innallaha yuhibbut-tawwabeena wa yuhibbul-mutatahhireen.

Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.

Quran 2:222

Reflect: Is there a sin you keep delaying repentance for? What is stopping you from turning back to Allah right now?

Practical Steps:

  • Make istighfar (Astaghfirullah) at least 100 times daily, as the Prophet did
  • Identify one sin you struggle with and make a sincere plan to stop it
  • Pray two raka'at of Salat al-Tawbah (prayer of repentance) and cry to Allah
  • Replace the sin with a good deed — every time you feel tempted, do something good instead

Love of Allah (Hubb Allah)

The greatest love the heart can hold

Love of Allah is the foundation of faith. When it fills the heart, obedience becomes easy, sin becomes bitter, and this world becomes small. The one who truly loves Allah loves what He loves, hates what He hates, and finds sweetness in worship that the world cannot provide. This love is earned through knowing Him — through His names, His book, and His creation.

Quran

Wa minan-nasi man yattakhidhu min dunillahi andadan yuhibbunahum ka-hubbillah. Walladhina amanu ashaddu hubbal-lillah.

And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.

Quran 2:165
Hadith

Thalathu man kunna fihi wajada halawatal-iman: an yakunallahu wa rasuluhu ahabba ilayhi mimma siwahuma, wa an yuhibbal-mar'a la yuhibbuhu illa lillah, wa an yakraha an ya'uda fil-kufri kama yakrahu an yuqdhafa fin-nar.

Three things, whoever has them will find the sweetness of faith: that Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else, that he loves a person only for the sake of Allah, and that he hates to return to disbelief just as he hates to be thrown into the Fire.

Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
Quran

Qul in kuntum tuhibbunallaha fattabi'uni yuhbibkumullahu wa yaghfir lakum dhunubakum. Wallahu Ghafurur-Raheem.

Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

Quran 3:31
Quran

Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanu man yartadda minkum 'an deenihi fa-sawfa ya'tillahu bi-qawmin yuhibbuhum wa yuhibbunah.

O you who believe, whoever among you should revert from his religion — Allah will bring forth a people He will love and who will love Him.

Quran 5:54

Reflect: If someone watched your daily life, would they say that Allah is the greatest love in your heart — or would your actions point to something else?

Practical Steps:

  • Increase your dhikr — the more you remember Allah, the more you love Him
  • Study the 99 Names of Allah and reflect on what each means for your life
  • Prefer what Allah loves over what your nafs desires, especially in moments of temptation
  • Pray tahajjud (night prayer) — the most intimate conversation with your Lord

Remembrance (Dhikr)

The nourishment of the soul and the polish of the heart

Dhikr is the remembrance of Allah in all states — with the tongue, the heart, and the limbs. It is the easiest form of worship yet the most rewarding. The heart that is empty of dhikr is like a dead body. When dhikr fills the heart, it brings peace, drives away shaytaan, strengthens faith, and illuminates the face and the soul.

Quran

Ala bi-dhikrillahi tatma'innul-quloob.

Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

Quran 13:28
Hadith

Ala unabbi'ukum bi-khayri a'malikum wa azkaha 'inda maleekikum wa arfa'iha fi darajatikum wa khayril-lakum min infaqidh-dhahabi wal-wariq, wa khayril-lakum min an talqaw 'aduwwakum fa-tadribu a'naqahum wa yadribu a'naqakum? Qalu: bala. Qala: dhikrullah.

Shall I not tell you of the best of your deeds, the purest in the sight of your Sovereign, the highest in your ranks, better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy and striking their necks and they strike yours? They said: "Yes." He said: "The remembrance of Allah."

Sunan at-Tirmidhi
Quran

Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanudh-kurullaha dhikran katheera. Wa sabbihuhu bukratan wa aseela.

O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon.

Quran 33:41-42
Quran

Fadhkuruni adhkurkum washkuru li wa la takfuroon.

So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.

Quran 2:152

Reflect: How much of your day passes without remembering Allah? Is your tongue busy with dhikr, or with idle talk?

Practical Steps:

  • Establish morning and evening adhkar as a daily non-negotiable habit
  • Say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar 33 times after each prayer
  • Keep your tongue moist with dhikr during daily tasks — walking, cooking, driving
  • Learn new forms of dhikr from the Sunnah and rotate them throughout the week

What is Tazkiyah?

Tazkiyah (تزكية) literally means “purification and growth.” In Islam, it refers to the lifelong process of purifying the soul (nafs) from spiritual diseases — arrogance, envy, greed, hypocrisy, heedlessness — and cultivating noble qualities like those described above.

Allah mentions tazkiyah as one of the core missions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

“He it is Who raised among the unlettered ones a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.”

Quran 62:2

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said:

“There is a piece of flesh in the body — if it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.”

Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim

Purifying the heart is not a one-time act but a daily struggle. It requires knowledge, practice, and constant turning back to Allah. The 8 qualities in this guide are a starting point — a map for the journey of the soul toward its Creator.
