فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ۚ وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ
“So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it.”
About the Qibla
The Qibla is the direction Muslims face during their five daily prayers (salah). It points toward the Kaaba, the sacred cube-shaped structure in Masjid al-Haram, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The Kaaba was originally built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (peace be upon them both) as the first house of worship dedicated to Allah.
Initially, Muslims prayed facing Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. About 16-17 months after the Hijrah (migration to Madinah), Allah revealed the command to change the Qibla direction to the Kaaba. This event is known as the “Tahweel al-Qibla” (change of the Qibla) and is mentioned in Surah al-Baqarah (2:142-150).
The Qibla direction is calculated using the great-circle bearing formula, which finds the shortest path between two points on the Earth's surface. This is the same formula used in aviation and maritime navigation. The calculation takes your GPS coordinates and computes the initial bearing toward the Kaaba at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E.
How to Use the Qibla Compass
Allow location access — tap the button to share your GPS coordinates so we can calculate the Qibla angle from your position.
On mobile — hold your phone flat and level. The compass arrow will rotate in real-time, pointing toward the Kaaba. Walk in the direction of the arrow.
On desktop — the compass shows the calculated Qibla angle. Use a physical compass or your phone's compass to face that direction.
Calibrate — if the compass seems inaccurate, move your phone in a figure-8 pattern to recalibrate the magnetometer. Keep away from magnets and large metal objects.
