About Surah Al-Qiyamah
Surah Al-Qiyamah (Arabic: القيامة), meaning "The Resurrection", is the 75th chapter of the Quran and has 40 verses. It was revealed in Makkah, when many of the Quraysh mocked the idea that decayed bones could live again. The surah argues for the certainty of resurrection and for each person's accountability before Allah.
It opens with two oaths, by the Day of Resurrection and by the self-reproaching soul (an-nafs al-lawwamah), and answers the doubter who thinks Allah will not gather his bones: He is able to restore even his fingertips. It describes that Day, when sight is dazzled, the moon is eclipsed and man asks where he can flee, and states that every person will be a witness against himself, whatever excuses he offers. A short passage instructs the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) not to move his tongue hastily to memorize revelation, for Allah Himself guarantees its collection, recitation and explanation. The surah contrasts radiant faces looking at their Lord with gloomy faces, portrays the moment the soul reaches the collarbones at death, and ends by asking whether the One who created man from a drop of fluid is not able to give life to the dead.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Al-Qiyamah
- What is an-nafs al-lawwamah?
- An-nafs al-lawwamah, sworn by in verse 2, is the self-reproaching soul: the conscience that blames a person for wrongdoing and for falling short in good. Many commentators describe it as the soul of the believer, which keeps holding itself to account.
- Why was the Prophet told not to move his tongue in Surah Al-Qiyamah?
- A report from Ibn Abbas in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim explains that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to move his lips quickly to memorize the revelation as Jibril recited it. Verses 16 to 19 told him to listen instead, because Allah had undertaken to gather the Quran in his heart, enable him to recite it and make its meaning clear.
- What does Surah Al-Qiyamah say about seeing Allah?
- Verses 22 and 23 describe faces on the Day of Resurrection that are radiant, looking at their Lord. Sunni scholars cite these verses, together with authentic hadith, as evidence that the believers will see Allah in the Hereafter.
