About Surah Al-Mutaffifin
Surah Al-Mutaffifin (Arabic: المطففين), meaning "The Defrauding", is the 83rd chapter of the Quran and has 36 verses. Most commentators hold it was revealed in Makkah, though some reports place it in Madinah and link its opening to traders there who gave short measure. The surah's argument is that cheating others, however small, reflects a heart that has forgotten the Day of Judgment.
It opens with a woe upon those who give less than due: those who demand full measure when they receive from people but give less when they measure or weigh for others. It asks whether they do not realize they will be raised for a tremendous Day when mankind stands before the Lord of the worlds. The surah then describes the record of the wicked kept in Sijjin, and their hearts covered by the stain (ran) of what they earned, so that they are veiled from their Lord. It contrasts this with the record of the righteous in Illiyyin, witnessed by those brought near to Allah, and their delights: couches, radiant faces and a sealed drink whose seal is musk, adding "So for this let the competitors compete." It ends by describing how the wrongdoers used to laugh at the believers and wink at one another, and how on that Day the believers will laugh at the disbelievers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Al-Mutaffifin
- What does Al-Mutaffifin mean?
- Al-Mutaffifin refers to those who cheat in measure and weight, taking full measure for themselves while giving others less than their due. Many commentators extend the lesson to every kind of unfairness, such as demanding one's full rights while falling short in the rights of others.
- What are Sijjin and Illiyyin?
- Sijjin, mentioned in verses 7 to 9, is where the record of the wicked is kept, described as a written register. Illiyyin, mentioned in verses 18 to 21, holds the record of the righteous and is witnessed by those brought near to Allah. Commentators associate Sijjin with the lowest depths and Illiyyin with the highest ranks.
- What is the rust on the heart mentioned in Surah Al-Mutaffifin?
- Verse 14 says that what the wrongdoers earned has covered their hearts, using the word ran, a stain or rust. A report in Sunan at-Tirmidhi, which he graded hasan sahih, explains that each sin leaves a black spot on the heart that is polished away by repentance but spreads if the sin is repeated, and that this is the ran mentioned in the verse.
