How to Pray Salah — Step by Step for Beginners

كيفية أداء الصلاة

Published February 19, 2026 · 12 min read · For New Muslims

What You Need to Know First:

Salah consists of standing, bowing, and prostrating while reciting Arabic phrases. Before praying, you must make wudu (ritual purification) and face Makkah. Each prayer has a set number of units (rak'ah). This guide covers every step with transliteration so you can begin without knowing Arabic script.

The 5 Daily Prayers

Muslims pray 5 times every day. Each prayer has a specific time window and a specific number of units (rak'ah):

PrayerTimeUnitsArabic
FajrBefore sunrise2الفجر
DhuhrMidday (after the sun passes its peak)4الظهر
AsrAfternoon4العصر
MaghribJust after sunset3المغرب
IshaNight4العشاء

Total: 17 units (rak'ah) of prayer every day.

Before You Pray

  • 1. Make wudu — Ritual purification with water. See our step-by-step wudu guide.
  • 2. Clean clothes — Your clothes and the place where you pray must be clean.
  • 3. Face the Qibla — The direction of Makkah. Use our Qibla tool to find your direction.
  • 4. Know your surah — Learn Surah Al-Fatiha and at least one other short surah.

How to Pray — Step by Step

Below is a complete guide to one unit (rak'ah) of prayer. For Fajr, you perform 2 of these units. For Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha — 4 units. For Maghrib — 3 units.

1

Make Wudu

Before prayer, you must be in a state of ritual purity (wudu). If you already have wudu and have not broken it, skip this step.

2

Face the Qibla

القبلة

Stand facing the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah. In Europe and North America, this is roughly northeast. Use your phone's Qibla finder to be precise.

3

Make the Intention (Niyyah)

النية

In your heart (silently), intend which prayer you are praying. Example: "I intend to pray 2 units of Fajr prayer for the sake of Allah." You do not need to say this aloud.

4

Opening Takbir

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allahu Akbar

Raise both hands to your earlobes and say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest). This officially begins the prayer. After this, fold your right hand over your left and place them on your chest.

5

Recite Al-Fatiha

الحمد لله رب العالمين

Al-hamdu lillahi rabb il-'alamin...

Recite Surah Al-Fatiha (the opening chapter). This is mandatory in every unit of prayer. After Al-Fatiha, recite another short surah (like Al-Ikhlas).

6

Ruku (Bowing)

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ

Subhana rabbiyal adheem

Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow forward. Your back should be flat, hands on knees. Recite "Subhana rabbiyal adheem" (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent) at least 3 times.

7

Rise from Ruku

سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ

Sami Allahu liman hamidah. Rabbana lakal hamd.

Rise to standing while saying "Sami Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him). Once standing, say "Rabbana lakal hamd" (Our Lord, praise be to You).

8

Sujud (Prostration)

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى

Subhana rabbiyal ala

Say "Allahu Akbar" and go down to prostration. 7 body parts touch the ground: forehead+nose, both palms, both knees, and toes of both feet. Say "Subhana rabbiyal ala" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) at least 3 times.

9

Sit and Second Prostration

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي

Rabbighfir li

Sit up briefly saying "Allahu Akbar." While sitting, say "Rabbighfir li" (My Lord, forgive me). Then prostrate again for the second Sujud. This completes one rak'ah (unit).

10

Tashahhud & Ending (Tasleem)

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ

As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah

After the final unit, sit and recite the full Tashahhud and Salawat. Then end the prayer by turning your head to the right and saying "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah," then to the left saying the same. Prayer is complete.

Tips for New Muslims Learning Salah

  • Start with Fajr. Just 2 units. This builds the habit before anything else.
  • Use transliteration. You don't need to read Arabic script. Phonetic transliteration is perfectly acceptable while you learn.
  • Watch YouTube videos. Search "how to pray salah step by step" — visual demonstrations help enormously.
  • Your prayer is valid while learning. Allah knows your effort and intention. Do not wait until you feel "ready" — begin now.
  • Use QuranMakkah to learn Al-Fatiha. Our audio sync + transliteration tool makes learning the mandatory surah very fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pray in English if I don't know Arabic?

The obligatory prayers should be in Arabic. However, as a new Muslim learning, you can use transliteration to read Arabic phonetically. Your prayer is valid while you are learning. Personal supplications (dua) can always be in your own language.

What if I miss a prayer?

Make it up as soon as you can. Pray it with the intention "I am making up the missed Fajr (or Dhuhr, etc.) prayer." Missing a prayer due to forgetfulness or sleep is forgiven — do not miss deliberately.

Do I need a prayer mat?

No. You can pray on any clean surface — carpet, tile, grass, or a clean towel. A prayer mat is not required but is a beautiful tradition.

How do I know the prayer times?

Prayer times change daily based on the sun's position. Use the Aladhan app, IslamicFinder, or any local mosque's schedule. Most Muslim prayer apps provide times for your city automatically.
