About Surah Al-Qadr
Surah Al-Qadr (Arabic: القدر), meaning "The Power", is the 97th chapter of the Quran and has 5 verses. Most commentators hold it was revealed in Makkah, though some reports place it in Madinah. The surah is about Laylat al-Qadr, often called the Night of Power or the Night of Decree, the night in which Allah sent down the Quran.
The surah states that Allah sent down the Quran on this night, then asks, to stress its greatness, what will make you know what the Night of Power is. It answers that this one night is better than a thousand months, that the angels and the Spirit, understood by most commentators as the angel Jibril, descend in it by the permission of their Lord with every decree, and that it is peace until the rising of dawn. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told the believers to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. He also said that whoever stands in prayer on it with faith and hoping for reward will have his past sins forgiven, a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. This is why the last ten nights of Ramadan are the most intense nights of worship in the year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah Al-Qadr
- When is Laylat al-Qadr?
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) told the believers to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. Its exact date was not fixed, which encourages believers to worship throughout all of those nights.
- Why is Laylat al-Qadr "better than a thousand months"?
- A thousand months is more than eighty-three years, longer than most people live. Verse 3 teaches that this single night carries more value than a thousand months, so worship done on it is a great mercy from Allah to this community.
- Who is "the Spirit" in Surah Al-Qadr?
- Most commentators understand "the Spirit" (ar-Ruh) in verse 4 as the angel Jibril, mentioned separately after the angels to honor him. On this night he descends with the other angels, by the permission of their Lord, with every matter Allah has decreed.
