About Surah An-Nas

Surah An-Nas (Arabic: الناس), meaning "Mankind", is the 114th and final chapter of the Quran in the order of the mushaf, and has 6 verses. Most commentators hold it was revealed in Makkah, though some reports place it in Madinah. It teaches the believer to seek refuge with Allah from the hidden whisperer who tempts people from within.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is instructed to say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the Ilah of mankind, the only One worthy of worship, from the evil of the retreating whisperer, who whispers into the hearts of mankind, from among jinn and mankind. Allah is called on with three descriptions, as Lord, King and the One worthy of worship, before a single danger is named. The whisperer is described as khannas, one who withdraws: commentators explain that he retreats when Allah is remembered and returns when a person becomes heedless. The word an-nas, mankind, appears in five of its six verses: 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. Where Al-Falaq seeks protection from outside harms, An-Nas seeks protection from the harm within, and the two are recited together morning and evening, as reported in Sunan Abi Dawud and at-Tirmidhi, and before sleep, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah An-Nas

What is the difference between Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas?
Al-Falaq seeks refuge from harms that come from outside, such as the darkness of night, sorcery and envy. An-Nas seeks refuge from the whispering that works inside a person's heart, which is why the two are recited together.
Who is "al-waswas al-khannas"?
Verse 4 names him as the whisperer who withdraws. Commentators explain that he whispers evil into people's hearts and pulls back when Allah is remembered, and verse 6 says such whisperers come from among both jinn and mankind.
Why is "an-nas" repeated in Surah An-Nas?
The word an-nas, meaning mankind, appears in verses 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, but not in verse 4. By calling on Allah as the Lord, King and only One worthy of worship of mankind, the surah reminds the reader that every person is under His care and authority.
