About Surah Al-Falaq

Surah Al-Falaq (Arabic: الفلق), meaning "The Daybreak", is the 113th chapter of the Quran and has 5 verses. Most commentators hold it was revealed in Makkah, though some reports place it in Madinah. Together with An-Nas, which follows it, it forms the pair known as al-Mu'awwidhatayn, the two surahs of seeking refuge, and the two are the last surahs in the order of the mushaf. It teaches the believer to seek protection with Allah from harms that come from outside a person.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is instructed to say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, from the evil of darkness when it settles, from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies. It moves from all created evil to three specific dangers: the night, sorcery and envy. In Sahih Muslim, the Prophet told Uqbah ibn Amir that verses had been revealed that night whose like had never been seen, and named Al-Falaq and An-Nas. They are recited three times each morning and evening, as reported in Sunan Abi Dawud and at-Tirmidhi.
