About Surah An-Nasr

Surah An-Nasr (Arabic: النصر), meaning "The Divine Support", is the 110th chapter of the Quran and has 3 verses. It was revealed in Madinah near the end of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and many commentators consider it among the last surahs to be revealed in complete form. The surah tells a believer how to respond to victory: with praise of Allah and by seeking His forgiveness.

The surah says: when the victory of Allah and the conquest have come, and you see people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes, then exalt your Lord with praise and ask His forgiveness, for He is ever accepting of repentance. Most commentators understand the victory as the conquest of Makkah. Sahih al-Bukhari reports that Ibn Abbas understood the surah as a sign that the Prophet's mission was complete and his death was near, and that Umar ibn al-Khattab agreed with him. Aisha reported, in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, that the Prophet often said in his bowing and prostration, "Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me," acting on the Quran.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surah An-Nasr

Was Surah An-Nasr the last surah revealed?
Many commentators consider it among the last surahs revealed in complete form, near the end of the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Some individual verses from other surahs are reported to have been revealed after it, so it is best described as one of the last complete surahs rather than the last revelation.
Which victory is mentioned in Surah An-Nasr?
Most commentators understand it as the conquest of Makkah. After it, delegations from tribes across Arabia came to accept Islam, which matches the surah's picture of people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes.
Why does Surah An-Nasr command seeking forgiveness after victory?
Success can bring pride, so the surah directs the believer to praise Allah and ask His forgiveness at the very moment of triumph. Sahih al-Bukhari reports that Ibn Abbas also saw in it a sign that the mission of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was complete, a reading Umar ibn al-Khattab confirmed.
